A few weeks ago I was asked if I would like to try Décopatch. Décopatch is a technique that works in a similar way to napkin technology and can actually be used to beautify any material. And since I had a couple of cups in my kitchen cupboard that needed some attention, I had an idea in my head. I hate to give away things that can still be made, only with the cups I didn’t really know what I could do with them to somehow permanently cover the advertising imprints. The small package with the papers, glue and varnish came just in time for me.

I was particularly drawn to the paper with many different small muffins, cupcakes etc., because what goes better with cake than a coffee in the right cup?

For the cup upcycling you need: a few old cups, possibly white acrylic paint, brush, decopatch paper, decopatch adhesive and decopatch varnish.

And this is how my cake cup was created:

If your cup, like mine, is printed, you first paint the corresponding areas with some acrylic paint and let it dry well. Then the individual cakes are cut out. In the next step, the pieces are glued on. Before that, however, you should already come up with a rough arrangement or arrange the snippets as they should be on the cup. For gluing, the pieces are first coated on the back with a little Décopatch glue, then placed and finally coated again with the glue.

This works bit by bit until all the little cakes have found their place. Now everything has to dry well, for 30 minutes. And to keep everything beautiful, the Décopatch lacquer is then used. I applied several layers of it, but after each layer I waited an hour with the next so that everything can dry well. Finished!

In the same way I designed a flowery mug, but not with smaller pieces of paper, but with a large piece of flower paper.

Conclusion: a great thing to embellish things quickly and easily, such as the cups. However, I recommend gluing the paper in small pieces when designing the cup, for example, as with my cake cup, or for large areas as a collage to avoid air pockets.

It’s also a good idea to give away, I think. Don’t forget: Christmas will be in three weeks!

It’s the same with every vacation: we come back with a lot more than we left. Because everything is somehow so beautiful and different from home and therefore has to be taken with you. Whether shells, corals, stones – when you get home, things usually end up in some corner and are quickly forgotten. Unfortunately I am also a candidate who thinks every second stone is beautiful and wants to wrap it up. From my Panama backpacking tour two years ago, a bag of shells is still waiting for further use (yes, I actually carried the bag in my backpack during the tour). Unfortunately, I cannot say what will happen to the shells, as soon as I have a good (not kitschy) idea, I will share it with you. For this, I was thinking about something that can be made from beautiful, flat stones, this time on site, on vacation: a coaster that can be used in many ways. Either very classic for the dining table to put the hot saucepan on, or for the hot espresso maker in the morning, for example. But he also does quite well with the decoration, whether as a flower pot trivet or simply to put together a small arrangement on it.

The whole thing is pretty simple, you only need some stones of the same height from your last vacation, some wire mesh, a side cutter and power glue. First you lay out a shape out of the stones, in which there are not too many gaps between the stones. The puzzles can take a little while, because “gapless” doesn’t mean “beautiful shape” at the same time.

Have you found your dream shape, take a picture! Then you brush the stones on the underside and where they have contact with neighboring stones with power glue.

Now stick the stones one after the other onto the grid and press each stone firmly for a few minutes. When all are glued on, let everything dry and air well.

When the glue is dry, the excess wire mesh is removed. It is best to cut everything roughly away first, then you turn the coaster over, so you can see exactly where the wire is not glued and can be removed. Finally, you can also check where you can remove the wire between the stones to get a “wireless” view. Already finished!

When it comes to designing dishes, I think that a cup or mug is the best choice when looking for a blank that can be embellished with colors, shapes, patterns and lettering. I have already considered some ideas for cups, so take a look at my overview for DIY porcelain cups past. When I discovered chalk paint that is also suitable for porcelain some time ago, I knew immediately: a new cup of DIY is due! Since the chalk color is so matt and feels so special, it can conjure up a wonderful contrast on shiny and smooth surfaces.

When it comes to porcelain, I am a big friend of delicate structures and I also like floral structures, which, however, must not be outdated. That is why I really wanted to put a leaf on the cup, not a flower. Well, real professionals are of course able to draw wonderful delicate motifs on porcelain, because I can’t say the same about myself and probably also about most other people, a figure is required here that is fairly simple step by step can draw. So it became a fern frond that can be applied to the cup in just three steps with the help of the finest possible brush.

And this is how it works:

You need a solid color Taxes, Chalk color for glass / porcelain in mint green and one brushthat should be as fine as possible. Clean the cup thoroughly so that there are no grease stains or dust on the surface.

Prepare paint

Stir the chalk paint neatly before you start drawing.

Start with a long fine line across the cup (at best you can get it a lot finer than I did).

Then draw further lines starting from the center line, which you let run out at the end. First on one side …

… then you mirror the lines to the other side. This is how the framework for the fern frond is created.

Then carefully dab small dots between the frame, making sure that the shape of the individual leaf ribs decreases towards the outside.

Freeze drawing

Now let the cup dry for 4 days, then put it in the oven again 30 (the exact instructions for baking can be found on the color bottle). When the cup has cooled down, it can be used; according to the color label, it should even be dishwasher-safe. Since I’m not so sure about that, I prefer to wash the cup by hand, it would be a real shame if all the work was for nothing 😉

Who says you only need to use blackboard paint to create writable surfaces? Lets go on we can do it better. The thick, pasty color can be used great to give damaged furniture a new, even surface, which also feels very special due to the nature of the color. In this way, I breathed life back into an old wooden stool. With a little sanding there wasn’t much to save, the seat surface had very unsightly, deep furrows. I also didn’t really like the color of the wood. Perhaps you are similar to me: I own furniture in too many different shades of wood. In this case, it is good to have some neutral pieces that are easy to combine and provide a little rest. That’s why I decided to use white paint for the rest of the stool in addition to the blackboard color, so that I could use it as versatile as possible as a neutral design element. Here we go!

This is how the stool looked before [1]. To make sure the paint holds well, I sanded it a little with sandpaper and a sanding block [2]. To paint the legs white, it is advisable to turn the stool upside down, then you can get anywhere with the brush [3]. Then it is deleted! Be sure to stir the color well beforehand. In addition, I recommend you to always get a larger pot of paint in case of doubt, on the one hand it is cheaper than a small pot, on the other hand you can always use white paint well (also for mixing pastel shades, for example), it is worth it to always have something there [4].

For good coverage, apply the white paint at least twice, but wait after each coat until the paint is completely dry (approx. 12 hours) [5]. Then the blackboard color comes into play. Mask off a piece with a little masking tape in the upper area of ​​the stool legs, equally spaced [6]. Then you apply the color crosswise. Again, at least two layers of paint are necessary. Don’t forget to paint the underside of the seat, although you rarely see it, but if it does, it will of course look a lot nicer if it is also black and not wood-colored [7]. Finally, remove the masking tape and let the blackboard paint dry well. Finished! [8]

My favorite furnishings in winter are clearly all kinds of textiles: whether cozy blankets or pillows – when it’s cold outside, I like to curl up at home and have a cup of chai tea. Because my laminate floor feels particularly cold in winter, I also find carpets incredibly important. I have long wanted a large cowhide for the living room, but it is very important to me that it is also a real fur. I am not a fan of imitations, nothing can replace the fluff, the durability and the natural smell of a real fur. Unfortunately, these real pieces are rather expensive and I also had to move to a small one-room apartment for a short time, where there is currently no space for such a large cowhide.

From one of my last DIYs, with one Cowhide stool emerged, I still had some remnants of the fur – but only a lot of small differently shaped parts and unfortunately not a large piece that would be big enough as a carpet. So I decided to make a patchwork rug out of the leftovers – without sewing. It is small and practical and can be placed wherever cold feet need to be cuddled. It is right in front of my favorite armchair so that I can sit and read there in a relaxed manner. But maybe I’ll soon put him right next to my bed so that when I get up in the morning I can immediately experience the fluffy feeling.

Do you now feel like conjuring up a cowhide rug? The practical thing is that you can actually use any rest – you just have to adjust the size of the individual squares. The smaller the square shape, the more puzzle pieces you can get from the leftovers. You can easily buy the cowhide remains yourself on the Internet, I found mine on DaWanda, for example. Otherwise you only need a pair of scissors, pen, ruler, all-purpose glue and a carpet fleece. You are ready to go!

Prepare fur leftovers

First you should consider the format of the individual squares. I chose a side length of 15 cm. So I couldn’t take full advantage of the leftovers that I had, but the smaller the format, the more you have to cut, of course. In addition, in this size, I think the patchwork pattern comes into its own. If you are unsure, cut a piece of paper into size and put it on the remnants as a test, so you can better estimate how many pieces you can win with it and how they look from the pattern.

The pieces are recorded and cut out with the fabric scissors. It can get really hairy. So it cuts best in an environment that is easy to vacuum, ideally it is of course outdoors, but at the temperatures it is not currently recommended.

Then you try the cut pieces together to find the right pattern. To be on the safe side, you can just take a picture of the finished sample before you start gluing.

Glue carpet

The individual elements are then provided with the all-round adhesive on the back …

and piece by piece glued to the carpet fleece! By the way, I recommend that you do not cut the fleece beforehand, but first stick all the squares on.

When the glue is dry, the remaining remnants of the fleece are cut off with the fabric scissors.

The patchwork carpet is ready! Now you just have to decide where the carpet can lie – or rather, in which part of the apartment your feet can enjoy a cozy and natural surface!

The winter weather still has us under control, which is exactly why I would like to introduce you to an upcycling project today, which brings a little bit of a summer mood to this gloomy January weather with bright colors and festival flair.

As is the case with many women, I have too many handbags, of which I actually only use a few regularly. When I finally discovered a beautiful, colorful, boho-style bag while browsing the Internet, I was able to remember this “too much” bag just in time before I clicked the “Buy” button. “I can do a bit of boho too,” I thought to myself, and I immediately found a simple black bag in the depths of my closet, which, because of some extremely noticeable signs of wear, urgently needed a makeover. The material needed for the beautification project depends entirely on your personal taste. First I went to the creative shop and after some inspiration I decided on a combination of tassels and sequins and a color mix of green, red and champagne.

If you like my variant of the boho look, you will now find out how you can quickly and easily bring an old handbag back to life:

I chose a small envelope bag. The size is ideal because the effort is limited. In addition, a single-color bag is more suitable than a patterned one because it offers a nicer background. As you can see, the bag actually had a strap to hang it around. I settled that at the very end because I like the boho look better than a clutch bag. My bag has a flexible strap that is easy to clip on and off, but sewn-on straps can usually be easily removed with a clean silhouette.

To decorate you need a larger tassel, golden sequins, thread in the color of the sequins and a few pretty colorful ribbons. Since I’m a real fringe fan, I chose ribbons with mini fringes. My sequins are unfortunately only made of plastic, of course your bag will be really great if you use small metal plates instead.

The fringe ribbons are first cut to the appropriate length …

… and then glued on. For this you use textile glue and apply it point by point to the back of your tapes.

Then place on the desired location and press firmly. The textile glue needs something to dry properly before it can be corrected. So make sure that your straps don’t slip when you work on the rest of the bag.

To attach the sequins, I first sewed the thread on the outermost edge of the bag …

… and then thread on the sequins. You can of course stick the sequins directly onto the bag without threading them, but the thread reduces the risk that you will lose the sequins later while using the bag. Fixes the threaded slices additionally with a small dab of textile adhesive. Here, steady fingers are required, because until the glue is dry, the sequins are unfortunately very flexible if you accidentally touch them.

This is how the sequins are designed row by row. At the end of each row you simply fix the thread on the outside of the bag as at the beginning.

I continued the rows until the bag was closed. Unfortunately I had a little too little of the sequins, otherwise I would probably have stuck the bag to the opening. Since you can hardly see this part of the bag anyway, it was not too tragic for me. Instead…

… the sequin layer ended with a pretty ribbon, so that it is now framed at the top and bottom.

The remaining tassel bands found their place on the flap of the bag. A little difficulty was the uneven fabric (as you can see in picture 1), but even if the bag to be glued has a structure, it can still be decorated, you just have to decide on a “deformation situation”, which you then consistently pasted without smoothing the bag in between or the like. It is best not to touch after the decoration has been applied until the glue has dried completely.

Finally, the big tassel is attached to the side. If your bag does not have a ring or hook on the side, simply sew the tassel on the side of the bag with a few stitches.

Wie viele andere Hauptstädter dieser Welt auch, lebe ich in Berlin auf sehr wenigen Quadratmetern in einer kleinen, kuschligen Einzimmerwohnung. Aber wie organisiere ich den wenigen Platz am besten und auf welche Weise kann ich Raumzonen schaffen? Damit beschäftigt sich mein Artikel, der in dem aktuellen Online Magazin wohnWERKen zu finden ist. Mein kreativer Vorschlag: einen DIY Raumteiler selber bauen, mit dem sich einfach und flexibel nach Bedarf unterschiedliche Raumbereiche definieren lassen.

Wer ebenfalls kein Freund von diesen klassischen Raumteilern im japanischen Stil oder aus Papier oder Bambus ist, dem kann ich sagen: Es geht auch anders. Mein selbstgebauter Paravent mit Bergmotiv und Kupferdetails aus Holz bringt skandinavisch schlichte Eleganz und eine wunderbare Prise frische (Berg-) Luft ins Zimmer. Ich liebe es einfach, Möbel und Wohnaccessoires selbst zu machen. So könnt ihr selbst bestimmte, welche Größe die Einrichtungsstücke haben und welche Farben und Materialien am besten in die Wohnung passen. Probiert es, auf dem Blog habe ich viele kreative Iden für euch!

Wollt ihr nun auch so einen Paravent mit Bergmotiv basteln? Ich zeige euch Schritt für Schritt, wie ihr den Raumteiler selber bauen könnt. Und keine Angst: Dafür müsst ihr keine Heimwerker-Profis sein.

Grundmaterial

Als Basis habe ich zwei Leimholzplatten aus Buche mit den Maßen 120 cm x 40 cm gewählt. Anfangs wollte ich eigentlich Sperrholzplatten verwenden, da diese aber nicht ganz plan sind, hab ich mich dann doch für das Leimholz entschieden. Ihr könnt den Paravent aber natürlich auch größer oder kleiner gestalten, je nachdem, wie viel Platz ihr habt und wie viel ihr mit dem Raumteiler verdecken möchtet.

Panorama vorbereiten

Zuerst zeichnet ihr euch mit Bleistift das Bergpanorama auf. Ich habe mir einfach online eine Touristenkarte einer Schweizer Bergkette angesehen und dann grob frei Hand die Skyline übertragen. Als Startpunkt habe ich mir eine Höhe von ca. 50 cm gesetzt. Natürlich könnt ihr das Panorama auf der Höhe eurer Wahl auftragen, je nachdem, wie viel weiße Farbe ihr auf dem Paravent haben möchtet.

Wenn die erste Hälfte vorgezeichnet ist, kommt das zweite Brett an die Reihe.

Panorama weiß gestalten

Im nächsten Schritt werden die Bleistift-Linien mit weißer Farbe und einem feinen Pinsel vorsichtig nachgezogen. Ich habe dafür matten Buntlack aus dem Baumarkt verwendet, ihr könnt aber z.B. auch Acrylfarbe benutzen.

Wenn ihr die feinen Linien des Panoramas nachgemalt habt, könnt ihr die Berge weiter mit der weißen Farbe ausfüllen. Die Bereiche um die Skyline tupft ihr am besten vorsichtig mit einem weichen Pinsel.

Je dunkler euer Holz, desto mehr Farbschichten werden auch notwendig sein. Lasst der Farbe zwischen den Schichten ausreichend Zeit zu trocknen und tragt die nächste Schicht erst auf, wenn sich die Farbe trocken fühlt. Ich habe das Bergmotiv nur auf die eine Seite des Paravents aufgetragen, ihr könnt natürlich auch beide Seiten bemalen.

Paravent zusammenbauen

Wenn die weiße Farbe getrocknet ist, werden die beiden Bretter, im oberen und im unteren Bereich, mit zwei Scharnieren verbunden. Mein Tipp um die richtige Scharnier-Größe für eure Bretter zu finden: Fragt direkt im Baumarkt, in dem ihr eure Bretter besorgt, einen Mitarbeiter und zeigt ihm die Bretter, er wird euch sicher die richtige Größe heraussuchen.

Deko-Füße montieren

Als Füße habe ich 8 Kupferrohre aus dem Baumarkt gewählt, die auf beiden Seiten des Paravents angebracht werden.

Da sie nur als Dekoration dienen und keine tragende Funktion haben, reicht es, sie mit Industriekleber am Paravent zu befestigen. Tragt währenddessen unbedingt Handschuhe, um eure Haut zu schützen.

Wenn der Kleber getrocknet ist, platziert ihr am besten noch ein paar Filzgleiter unter dem Brett und den Füßen. So könnt ihr den Raumteiler mühelos bewegen, ohne euren Boden zu zerkratzen. Fertig!
